About Patient Searches

You can search for a patient in RIS using many different search parameters. Some of the most common search parameters are last name/first name, patient ID, and birth date. You can also search for names based on "starts with" or "sound like."

The Search window can be customized by your system administrator to optimize the search capabilities for your site.

• Guidelines for searching

  • Use either upper or lower case in each field.

  • Use the wildcard characters * and %. For example, mi*s returns patient names starting with Mi and ending with s (Michaels, Mills), 416% returns patients with IDs starting with 416.

  • Special punctuation marks and other characters are not recognized. For example, "John=Doe" is the same as "John Doe."

  • Results are read-only.

  Search criterion	Description
  Starts with	Used with name fields to automatically select all names starting with the entered letter combination. For example, entering da returns Dahler, Davis. Selected by default.
  Whole	Used with name fields to search for exact matches. For example, entering John returns all patients with the first name John. However it does not return Johnathan.
  Sounds like	Used with name fields to search for patients when names sound similar. For example, Steven, Stephen, Stefan.
  Search	Starts the search based on the information you have entered.
  Reset	Clears the data from the search fields.

  Mills +Terry	Returns all records containing both Mills and Terry
  Mills -Terry	Returns all records containing Mills excluding any rows with Terry
  Mills, Terry	Returns all records containing both Mills and Terry
  Mills=Terry	Returns all records containing both Mills and Terry
  Mills OR Terry	Returns all records containing Mills or containing Terry
  Mills AND Terry	Returns all records containing both Mills and Terry
  Terry Mills	Returns all records containing both Mills and Terry
  Terr%	Returns all records containing Terr
  !Terry	Returns all records containing Terry
  Terr*	Returns all records containing Terr
  5994393385	Returns all records containing 5994393385. Note: The patient search will only search for phone numbers using numbers only.
  19221208	Returns all records containing 19221208. Note: The patient search will only search for birthdates using the YYYYMMDD format.

• Quick Search

  Located at the top of the screen, lets you quickly search for a patient by entering the last name or patient ID.
